Congratulations to all of this year's winners of Kansas City Homes & Gardens' 2010 Remodeling Awards announced recently. The awards showcase the best work of builders, designers, and contractors in our area. The 2010 Remodel of the Year Grand Award went to a California split-level transformed into a European estate. Remembering Hurricane Katrina on 5th Anniversary
This weekend marks the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and to mark the milestone the non-profit, Rebuilding Together, has set out to renovate 50 New Orleans homes in 5 days. The tremendous effort, known as "Fifty for Five," has received the support of HGTV, Sears, and many others to help revitalize the area. Cash for Caulkers Vote Delayed
The Senate vote to pass legislation including the "Cash for Caulkers" rebate program for household energy efficiency upgrades we told you about last month has been delayed for the August recess, and Consumer Reports is forecasting that it may not have enough steam to ever get off the ground. "Cash for Caulkers", which was passed by the House of Representatives earlier this year, along with its parent global warming bill will be back up for consideration by the Senate in mid-September at the earliest. Labor Day began in 1882 as the start of the labor movement and celebrates the social and economic achievements of American workers on the first Monday of September each year. Here are some interesting facts about the U.S. labor force:
- In May 2009 there were 155.1 million people (age 16 and up) in the labor force.
- The professions with the most workers include teachers, customer service representatives, registered nurses, computer software engineers, chief executives, and janitors and building cleaners.
- There are 10.3 million independent contractors.
- 7.7 million people hold down more than one job.
- 28% work more than 40 hours per week, and 8% work more than 60 hours per week.
